Indian Ginseng for Stress Relief - Ashwagandha

Ashwagandha, known as the Ginseng of India, is an exotic herb. Also known as Winter Cherry, it comes from the root of a tall branching shrub with yellow-green flowers, cultivated in India and North America. The shrub is called Withania Somnifera. Ashwagandha calms and strengthens the nervous system, promotes sleep, helps arthritis, relieves weakness and clears the mind. It is considered a promoter of good health and well being for the entire body, similar to other "ginsengs". However, unlike regular Ginseng, it has a sedative effect on the Central Nervous System. Regular Ginseng has a stimulant effect. Ashwagandha contains natural chemicals and flavonoids which calm the central nervous system and balance the systems in the body. It has been shown to act as an anti-inflammatory as well, comparable to hydrocortisone. Ashwagandha contains the amino acids alanine, glycine, proline, tyrosine and valine which enhance brain function.

Ashwagandha has been used for thousands of years in India as a folk medicine by Ayurvedic practitioners. It has undergone valid scientific testing and in a double-blind study in India, healthy males taking this Indian ginseng showed slowed signs of aging, less grey hair, lower serum cholesterol, and increased sexual performance. Indian scientists have also proven that Ashwagandha disrupts the ability of cancer cells to reproduce. Both skin and stomach cancer were slowed with its use. A test on rats in Germany showed that acetylcholine metabolism was affected in the brain by Ashwagandha. Acetylcholine is the most abundant neurotransmitter in the brain and is essential for good memory and cognitive abilities. A recent Japanese study showed that the compounds in Indian ginseng reduced the growth of colon, breast and lung cancer. In India, Ashwagandha is used to treat geriatric patients, amnesia and as an antioxidant treatment, since its use has shown to increase three antioxidants: superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase. Other studies showed that Ashwagandha has antimicrobial and antibacterial properties against such bacteria as Salmonella.

Ashwagandha may be taken daily. So far no dangerous side affects have been reported with use in moderate dosages, which is 2-6 grams daily. It should not be taken by pregnant women, with sedatives or illegal drugs. It comes in various forms such as powder, liquid, tablet and dried root. Many health food stores carry it.

Is This Hypertension High Blood Pressure Medication Right for You?

Adalat (whose generic name is nifedipine) is a medication that is used primarily to treat hypertension (high blood pressure) and angina (chest pain). Nifedipine is the active ingredient in the brand name drugs Procardia and Nifedical.

Adalat is a calcium channel blocker and works by relaxing blood vessels. By relaxing blood vessels the arteries in your heart relax allowing more blood flow thereby reducing your blood pressure.

Adalat should only be taken if a doctor has prescribed it for you. It is important that Adalat be taken on an empty stomach and should be taken whole, never crushed or chewed. You should also avoid eating grapefruit or products containing grapefruit unless approved by your doctor. If Adalat is prescribed for you, you should try to take it at the same time every day. It is very important not to stop taking Adalat even if you feel better unless advised to do so by your doctor. Remember, there are usually no warning signs of hypertension (high blood pressure) and even if you feel well you could still be in danger of heart attack, stroke, and blindness. Generally if your physician decides to stop Adalat treatment he or she will gradually reduce your dosage. Do not stop taking Adalat suddenly as your condition may become worse.

Dizziness, headaches, and swelling of the limbs may occur with Adalat. Generally these are not serious but you should tell your doctor about any side effects that occur while you are taking Adalat. Your blood pressure should be checked routinely while on Adalat. If your blood pressure readings seem to escalate inform your doctor right away.

Adalat has a proven track record for treating hypertension and angina but only you and your doctor can determine if it is right for you. This article does not take the place of professional medical advice and should never be taken except under the direction of your physician.

Karela (Momordica Charantia) For The Prevention Of Diabetes

Rich in iron, bitter melon has twice the beta carotene of broccoli, twice the calcium of spinach, twice the potassium of bananas, and contains vitamins C and B 1 to 3, phosphorus and good dietary fiber. It is believed to be good for the liver and has been proven by western scientists to contain insulin, act as an anti-tumor agent, and inhibit HIV-1 infection

At least three diverse groups of components in bitter melon been have indicated to have hipoglicйmicas actions (sugar of the blood that lower) or others of the potential advantage in mellitus of the diabetes. These include a mixture of saponins steroidal known like charantin, insulin-like peptides, and the alkaloids. It continues being non understandable that of these is most effective, or if work three together. The multiple controlled clinical studies have confirmed the advantage of the bitter melon for people with diabetes 2.

To date, close to 100 in vivo studies have demonstrated the blood sugar-lowering effect of this bitter fruit. The fruit has also shown the ability to enhance cells uptake of glucose, to promote insulin release, and to potentiate the effect of insulin. In other in vivo studies, bitter melon fruit and/or seed has been shown to reduce total cholesterol. In one study, elevated cholesterol and triglyceride levels in diabetic rats were returned to normal after 10 weeks of treatment.

Several in vivo studies have demonstrated the antitumorous activity of the entire plant of bitter melon. In one study, a water extract blocked the growth of rat prostate carcinoma; another study reported that a hot water extract of the entire plant inhibited the development of mammary tumors in mice. Numerous in vitro studies have also demonstrated the anticancerous and antileukemic activity of bitter melon against numerous cell lines, including liver cancer, human leukemia, melanoma, and solid sarcomas.

Bitter melon, like several of its isolated plant chemicals, also has been documented with in vitro antiviral activity against numerous viruses, including Epstein-Barr, herpes, and HIV viruses. In an in vivo study, a leaf extract increased resistance to viral infections and had an immunostimulant effect in humans and animals, increasing interferon production and natural killer cell activity.

In addition to these properties, leaf extracts of bitter melon have demonstrated broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity. Various extracts of the leaves have demonstrated in vitro antibacterial activities against E. coli, Staphylococcus, Pseudomonas, Salmonella, Streptobacillus, and Streptococcus; an extract of the entire plant was shown to have antiprotozoal activity against Entamoeba histolytica. The fruit and fruit juice have demonstrated the same type of antibacterial properties and, in another study, a fruit extract demonstrated activity against the stomach ulcer-causing bacteria Helicobacter pylori.

High Blood Pressure Medication - What You Need To Know

You may have heard of the drug Altace and its main purpose of cutting the risk of heart failure. Well Altace medication also improves the chances of leading a normal life even for someone who has suffered a heart attack. The drug is part of the ACE inhibitors (angiotensin converting enzymes) family of medications.

What health conditions are incompatible with Altace medication?

We ought to start here by recommending to you that if you have any other medical condition or have had in the past, you should discuss these details in your consultation with your doctor before commencing with the treatment. You can find information in many places on the internet but only a doctor is able to give the right medical advice and treatment administration that best suits your situation including how to combine Alatace medication with other drugs you are taking.

You may not know that Altace medication is also known as Ramipril. The drug ought not to be taken by a sufferer of diabetes and live dysfunction due to the possible side effects that can occur with it. Additionally, patients who now or have had any kind of kidney disease, or who are currently on dialysis are recommended to not use Altace medication.

Adjustments to dosage can sometimes be required for those patients taking prescribed drugs for rheumatoid arthritis of scleroderma in combination with those administering the Altace medication. Your doctor whilst you are taking the treatment may want to check for stability of your overall health condition by use of medical tests.

Administration details

Most other drugs designed to improve high blood pressure should not be taken with food but the Altace medication is different. The dosage advised to be taken by the doctor can be taken during or between meals.

That being said it is important to drink plenty of liquid whilst taking the treatment as the active compounds in the drug cause dehydration

If you don't drink sufficient quantities of liquid during your course of Altace medication, consequences could be severe; kidney failure, electrolyte disorder or low blood pressure are the more serious conditions caused with diarrhea and vomiting also being possibilities

It is important for close monitoring of the blood pressure levels to be carried out whilst taking Altace medication as the doctor will want to chart the progress of the treatment to see its effectiveness on the blood pressure.

But the worst thing you can do when taking the Altace medication is to drink alcohol in combination; alcohol is known to reduce blood pressure, so your blood pressure could suddenly drop to dangerous levels causing dire consequences. So of course alcoholic beverages are banned during a course of Altace treatment.

You are probably aware of how Altace medication is continuing to be effective when used to lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of heart attacks. It can also help those who have suffered a heart attack in the past live a normal life. As with any prescription medication, care should be taken while administering Altace but as a treatment for high blood pressure you should find it sufficiently effective.

How To Stay Safe When Taking High Blood Pressure Medication

High blood pressure is treated with many different groups of medicines. Each group affects the body in a different way. Depending on your full assessment, your doctor may decide you need a single medicine, or a combination of two or more.

Beta blockers are one group. They slow the heart down. They also reduce the force with which it pumps blood and therefore prevent the heart from working as hard. The end result of these actions is lower blood pressure.

What is Toprol-XL?

Toprol-XL is a beta blocker designed to give up medicine slowly in your body. Drip, drip, drip. This way, you can take your medicine less frequently. Also, this is a gentler way for your body to receive medication, rather than having a big hit with each dose.

Common Toprol-XL side effects

As with any medicine, you should be aware that side effects are a very real possibility.

Some commonly reported side effects you want to watch out for include: dizziness, tiredness, cold hands or feet, anxiety, disturbed sleep, disturbed bowels and dry eyes, mouth, and skin.
How to take Toprol-XL safely

  1. Double check your doctor's directions on how to take your medicine. Do you know the amount you should take? When you should take it? How you should take it - with or without food?
  2. Keep a record and tell your doctor every thing else that you take. Include other prescription drugs, supplements, alternative remedies, and over-the-counter meds.
  3. If you have any questions at all about side effects while taking Toprol-XL, the best people to talk to are your pharmacist and your doctor. Speak to them right away.
  4. If anyone recommends you stop taking Toprol-XL, for whatever reason, even if this person is another doctor, DON'T. First discuss it with your doctor who prescribed it for you in the first place. The two doctors will probably need to contact each other to make sure their treatments work in harmony. If you all decide that stopping Toprol-XL is right for you, your doctor will recommend a safe way to gradually stop. You must never stop taking Toprol-XL abruptly.

Medication That Is Used In The Treatment Of Moderate To Severe Pain

Tramadol, also sold under brand names Ultram and Ultram ER, is a narcotic pain reliever used in the treatment of moderate to severe pain The extended-release (ER) version is used to treat chronic pain that requires 24-hour maintenance. In addition, there may be other uses for this medication.

Before taking Tramadol, it is important to discuss with your doctor whether you have ever been addicted to drugs or alcohol. This is important because Tramadol should not be taken when one is intoxicated or by those who have recently used drugs such as alcohol, other narcotic pain medications, medication for the treatment of depression or anxiety, tranquilizers such as Valium, medicine for the treatment of mental illness such as schizophrenia, or street drugs.

Further, although the risk of seizure is present for all users of Tramadol, this risk may be significantly higher in those who have certain medical conditions. For that reason, it is important that you tell your doctor if you suffer from any of the following conditions: a history of drug abuse, epilepsy or seizure disorder, previous head injury, or a metabolic disorder.

Other disorders that may make Tramadol contraindicated include kidney disease, liver disease, any disorder of the stomach, or a history of depression or mental illness.

If you are pregnant and considering taking Tramadol, it is important to know that the drug is in pregnancy category C. This means that the medication may be harmful to an unborn baby, and it may also cause serious - or even fatal - side effects in a newborn if it is administered to the mother during pregnancy or labor. Note, too, that Tramadol can enter a mother's breast milk and can therefore be harmful to a nursing baby.

Age is a factor in a patient's suitability for Tramadol, too. It should not be given to anyone under 16 years of age, and for those over 65 a lower-than-usual dose may be recommended. Finally, take Tramadol exactly as it has been prescribed. Take it with a full glass of water and do not crush the tablet. You may take it with or without food, but whichever way you choose, be sure to take it the same way every time.

Skeletal Muscle Relaxants Uses, Efficacy, and Side Effects

Skeletal muscle relaxants are a heterogeneous group of medications. As a class, they are structurally and pharmacologically diverse. Muscle relaxants are used to treat two different types of underlying conditions:

  • spasticity from upper motor neuron syndromes

  • muscular pain or spasms from peripheral musculoskeletal conditions

Although muscle relaxants have by convention been classified into one group, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved only a few medications in this class for treatment of spasticity. The remainder are approved for treatment of musculoskeletal conditions.

Drugs classified as skeletal muscle relaxants include:

  • baclofen (Lioresal)

  • carisoprodol (Soma)

  • chlorzoxazone (Paraflex)

  • cyclobenzaprine (Flexeril)

  • dantrolene (Dantrium)

  • metaxalone (Skelaxin)

  • methocarbamol (Robaxin)

  • orphenadrine (Norflex)

  • tizanidine (Zanaflex)

Muscle relaxants for treatment of spasticity

Spasticity is a state of increased muscular tone with exaggeration of the tendon reflexes. Some of the more common conditions associated with spasticity and requiring treatment include multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, cerebral palsy, and poststroke syndrome. In many patients with these conditions, spasticity can be disabling and painful with a marked effect on functional ability and quality of life.

The upper motor neuron syndrome is a complex of signs and symptoms that can be associated with exaggerated cutaneous reflexes, autonomic hyperreflexia, dystonia, contractures, paresis, lack of dexterity, and fatigability. Spasticity from the upper motor neuron syndrome can result from a variety of conditions affecting the cortex or spinal cord.

Only baclofen, dantrolene, and tizanidine are approved for treatment of spasticity. There is fair evidence that baclofen and tizanidine are roughly equivalent for efficacy in patients with spasticity, but insufficient evidence to determine the efficacy of dantrolene compared to baclofen or tizanidine. Tizanidine is associated with more dry mouth and baclofen with more weakness.

Muscle relaxants for treatment of musculoskeletal conditions

Muscle spasm is defined as a sudden involuntary contraction of one or more muscle groups and is usually an acute condition associated with muscle strain (partial tear of a muscle) or sprain (partial or complete rupture of a ligament). Common musculoskeletal conditions causing tenderness and muscle spasms include fibromyalgia, tension headaches, myofascial pain syndrome, and mechanical low back pain or neck pain. If muscle spasm is present in these conditions, it is related to local factors involving the affected muscle groups.

The skeletal muscle relaxants carisoprodol, chlorzoxazone, cyclobenzaprine, metaxalone, methocarbamol, and orphenadrine are approved for treatment of musculoskeletal disorders.

Clinical studies show, that cyclobenzaprine, carisoprodol, orphenadrine, and tizanidine are effective compared to placebo in patients with musculoskeletal conditions (primarily acute back or neck pain). Cyclobenzaprine has been evaluated in the most clinical trials and has consistently been found to be effective.

Efficacy

Most studies have shown the skeletal muscle relaxants to be more effective than placebo in the treatment of acute painful musculoskeletal disorders and muscle spasm, while efficacy was less consistent when treating chronic disorders. When muscle relaxants were used alone, they were not consistently superior to simple analgesics in relieving pain. When the skeletal muscle relaxants were used in combination with analgesics, pain relief is superior to either agent used alone. Studies have suggested that these drugs are effective, have tolerable side effects, and can be an adjunct in the treatment of painful musculoskeletal conditions with associated muscle spasm.

No studies have documented superior efficacy of one skeletal muscle relaxant over another.

Side Effects and Adverse reactions

  • All skeletal muscle relaxants may cause sedation (drowsiness, dizziness).

  • Baclofen may cause severe central nervous system depression with cardiovascular collapse and respiratory failure.

  • Dantrolene has a potential for hepatotoxicity. Overt hepatitis has been most frequently observed between the third and twelfth months of therapy. Risk of hepatic injury appears to be greater in women, in patients over 35 years of age and in patients taking other medications in addition to dantrolene.

  • Carisoprodol has some potential for dependence and withdrawal symptoms.

  • Cyclobenzaprine, closely related to the tricyclic antidepressants, causes the expected lethargy and anticholinergic side effects, and may have some toxicity in overdose and in combination with other substances.

  • Tizanidine may cause low blood pressure, but this may be controlled by starting with a low dose and increasing it gradually. The drug may rarely cause liver damage.

  • Methocarbamol and chlorzoxazone may cause harmless color changes in urine - orange or reddish-purple with chlorzoxazone and purple, brown, or green with methocarbamol. The urine will return to its normal color when the patient stops taking the medicine.

What Medications Are Available for Treating Sinusitis?

Sinusitis occurs when any number of the sinus linings become inflamed. Typically this results in a patient that has suffered from allergies or a cold for more than a two week period. There are several symptoms of sinusitis but the most common include tooth pain, nasal congestion, headache, facial congestion, postnasal drip, or facial pain.

People can suffer from sinusitis because of the common cold, viral infections, bacterial infections, air pressure, temperature changes, misuse, or overuse of nasal decongestants, swimming, diving, smoking, or even consumption of alcohol.

To treat sinusitis, or many other types of bacterial ailments, your physician may prescribe Levaquin. Levaquin works to kill the different bacteria that infect the sinuses. However, if a virus is affecting the sinuses, Levquin will not work. It, like all other antibiotics on the market, cannot work to eliminate viruses.

Leviquin comes in two different medication forms, tablets and oral solutions. Each has strengths from 250 mg to 750 mg. Furthermore, it is a one daily treatment that should be regulated at the same time daily. Antibiotics work best when kept at a constant level throughout the body. Therefore, when taking Levaquin, you should do so at the same time every day and keep plenty of fluids in your body at all times.

So if you take your medication at 8:00 am one day, the very next day you should take it at 8:00 am as well, and keep doing so until the medication course is completed.

Any person, who is allergic to quinolones, should avoid taking Levaquin. There have been instances of allergic reactions in some people taking quinolones, which includes Levaquin, that have been extremely serious and sometimes fatal. It is not recommended that you take levaquin while you are nursing or pregnant, as studies have not shown the effects on an unborn child. Furthermore, Levaquin is only for adult and not for use by children.

As with any medication, Levaquin has possible side effects from mild to serious. Some of the mild and most common side effects of the drug include nausea, itching, diarrhea, dizziness, abdominal pain, vaginitis, rash, and flatulence.

Some more serious side effects include peripheral neuropathy which has side effects that include pain, tingling, burning, weakness, and numbness. Any person experiencing these side affects should crease taking Levaquin immediate and call their physician right away.

Further serious side effects could include tendon ruptures within the Achilles, hand, or shoulder tendons. These have side effects that includes swelling and pain. If you experience these side effects, you should report them to your physician immediately.

For those with diabetes, if you should experience low blood sugar, shakiness, sweating, or lightheadedness you should contact your physician immediately and cease taking Levaquin.

Other serious side effects of Levaquin could include sunburns, sun blisters, convulsions, and tremors. If you experience anxiety, restlessness, confusion, lightheadedness, paranoia, hallucinations, nightmares, depression, suicidal thoughts, insomnia, or suicidal acts, you should consult with your physician.

Disclaimer - The information presented here should not be interpreted as or substituted for medical advice. Please talk to a qualified professional for more information about Levaquin.

Insulin Resistance: Change Your Diet

Late onset diabetes usually means that a person has too much insulin because his cells cannot respond to insulin. Too much insulin constricts arteries to cause heart attacks, and stimulates your brain and liver to make you hungry and manufacture fat.

Most people who develop diabetes in later life can be controlled so that they are not at increased risk for the many complications of diabetes such as heart attacks, strokes, blindness, deafness, amputations, kidney failure, burning foot syndrome or varicose veins with skin ulcers.

The Insulin Resistance Syndrome puts you at very high risk for a heart attack and is associated with storing fat in the belly, rather than the hips; having high blood triglyceride levels and low level of the good HDL cholesterol; and high blood pressure.

If you have any of these signs, check with your doctor who will order a blood test called HBA1C. If it is high, you have diabetes and can usually be controlled with diet and/or medication. You should learn how to avoid foods that give the highest rise in blood sugar. When you eat, blood sugar level rises. The higher it rises, the more sugar sticks on cells. Once stuck on a cell membrane, sugar can never detach itself. It is converted to a poison called sorbitol that damages the cell to cause all the side effects of diabetes mentioned above.

The foods that cause your blood sugar to rise quickly include all types of flour products: bread, spaghetti, macaroni, bagels, rolls, crackers, cookies and pretzels; refined corn products and white rice; and all sugar-added foods.

There are two type of drugs that are used to treat diabetes: those that lower blood sugar and raise insulin, and those that lower blood sugar and lower insulin also. The safest drugs are those that lower both insulin and sugar. Most diabetics should be on Glucophage (metformin) before meals, at least while you are learning to change your diet and bring your weight where it belongs. It prevents blood sugar levels from rising too high and sticking to cells and has an excellent safety record. However, eating a bagel will produce such a high rise in blood sugar that Glucophage will not be effective, so Glucophage must be used in addition to avoiding foods that cause a high rise in blood sugar. If HBA1C cannot be controlled with diet and Glucophage, your doctor will usually add Avandia 4mg or Actos 30mg. They are essentially the same and can cause liver damage, so liver tests must be done monthly, at least for the first few months.

You should be seen monthly and get either a HBA1C (which measures blood sugar control over the past two months) or fructosamine (which measures control over two weeks). Each time that your HBA1C is above normal (6.1), you should yell at your doctor to change your drugs and he should yell at you to change your diet.

If your HBA1C is still not under control, you need to take a drug that raises insulin levels. I usually start with Glipizide XL. If that doesn't control your HBA1C, I raise the dose, and if that still doesn't work, you will need to inject yourself with insulin. Check with your doctor.

Stress Fractures, Blood Pressure Medications: Common Runner's ...

What’s the best way to treat a stress fracture?

Bone stress fractures are very common sports injuries. Any trauma to bones, such as repeated pounding when your heel strikes the ground during running, or landing on your feet after grabbing a basketball, can cause small cracks on the surface of bones called stress fractures. In healthy athletes, they can take from 3 to 12 weeks to heal, forcing an athlete to lose valuable training time. A study from Tulane University shows that intravenous pamidronate can heal these fractures quickly and keep the playing (Clinical Journal of Sports Medicine, March 2005). Bones change constantly. Calcium is carried from bones by cells called osteoclasts and carried into bones by cells called osteoblasts. Bisphosphonates such as pamidronate prevent osteoclasts from carrying calcium from bones. The athletes received five weekly intravenous infusions of pamidronate and were able to continue training, even though they had painful small fractures in bones of their feet and legs.

Will blood pressure drugs interfere with your running program?

The beta blocker drugs used to treat blood pressure and heart problems can markedly impair your ability to exercise, according to a study from Switzerland (European Journal of Applied Physiology, October 2005). How hard you can exercise is limited by the ability of your heart to pump blood from your lungs to your exercising muscles. Beta blockers markedly reduce blood flow and oxygen supply to muscles. Beta blocker brand names include Toprol, Inderal, Blocadron, Coreg, Inopran, Levatol, Pindolol, Sectral, Tenormin, Timolol Trandate, Zebeta and Bisoprol.

Beta blockers are prescribed to treat people who have had heart attacks, heart pain, heart failure, rapid heart beat and atrial fibrillation. However, even though many physicians prescribe beta blockers to treat high blood pressure, there is no data show that they prevent heart attacks in healthy people. If beta blockers interfere with your ability to exercise, ask your doctor if you can take other types of medications such ace inhibitors, angiotensin receptor blockers or calcium channel blockers..

Bodybuilder's Drugs!

Despite the amount of press that steroids and prohormones usually receive you’d think that these were the only two substances that bodybuilders were using. But nothing could be further from the truth. There are dozens if not hundreds of compounds available that modern bodybuilders have at their fingertips to boost their muscle-building abilities and fat loss. The following are some of the more popular drugs that you’ll find in gym bags these days.

Estrogen blockers (i.e. Tamoxifen)

Estrogen blockers are a perfect example of using one drug to reduce the side effects caused by another drug. Even though steroids are relatively safe, they may cause side effects in certain individuals. One of the most unsightly of these is called gynecomastia. Essentially males also have receptors for the female hormone estrogen in their bodies, and one of the highest concentrations is found in the nipple region. As one of the breakdown products of steroids is estrogen, the increased levels of the female hormone can activate the estrogen receptors in the nipple region. The end result is the development of feminine-like breasts. The term “bitch tits” is often used as the growth may actually start to look just like women’s breasts. In most cases the condition will clear up after termination of steroid use, but in some cases the growth will need to be surgically removed.

Although some bodybuilders rely on luck or surgery to deal with gynecomastia, the smart ones turn to estrogen blockers. As the name suggests, estrogen blockers are compounds that block the feminizing effects of estrogen in the male’s body. The exact mechanism of action is unknown but it is believed that the drug binds to estrogen receptors preventing the real hormone from activating the cells.

Human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG). Although steroids may accelerate muscular growth, there is one part of the anatomy that they may actually shrink – the testes!

Following the old saying “use it or lose it” steroids often cause the body to shut down it’s own natural production of testosterone. After a period of time the testes begin to atrophy (shrink) because of a lack of use. In most cases they’ll begin remanufacturing testosterone when the steroids are stopped, but depending on the length of the cycle and the individual’s genetics, recovery may take weeks if not months. To combat this bodybuilders have once again turn to pharmacology.

Human chorionic gonadotrophin is a hormone only found in the placenta of pregnant women. It doesn’t seem to play much of a role for women, but for bodybuilders it has one appealing property; it mimics the action of luteinizing hormone (LH) in the body. LH is a pituitary hormone that once released, signals the testes to begin manufacturing testosterone. Hopefully you can now see why HCG would be an important drug for bodybuilders who are coming off long steroid cycles.

Diuretics (i.e. Lasix)

One of the most difficult tasks facing competitive bodybuilders is getting that “shredded” look for competition. But even when they experience significant fat loss and manage to drop their body fat percentages down to two or three percent, there is often a thin layer of water blurring the muscularity, giving that dreaded “smooth” look. Years ago saunas and wearing four layers of clothes were the usual choices for shedding water, but things have “evolved” and as with most things in bodybuilding now days, the solution for many is found in a pill bottle.

Diurectics are drugs that stimulate the body to lose water. Most work by blocking the actions of the water-conserving hormone, aldosterone. The most popular diuretic for shedding water is Lasix which can be taken in pill or injectable forms. Lasix and other diuretcis are very effective for shedding water, but they also cause the body to excrete important substances called electrolytes. These electrrcally-charged ions such as sodium, potassium, and chlorine, play vital roles in modulating various metabolic systems including, muscle contraction, nerve conduction, and heart beat. A number of individuals have died from diuretic overdosing over the years.

Thyroid Drugs (i.e. Cytomel). Compare pictures of competitors today with those from the 1970’s or 1980’s and you’ll see two important differences. First of all today’s contestants are carrying a lot more muscle mass. Bodybuilders are also much more ripped onstage. While steroids and growth hormone have probably contributed the most to the increased muscle size, the lower body fat levels are usually the result of thyroid drugs.

The thyroid gland is located in the middle of the lower neck, just below the larynx (voice box) and slightly above your collarbones. The thyroid gland produces two primary peptide hormones called tetraiodothyronine (thyroxine or T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). Both these iodine-containing hormones are essential for life and have many effects on body metabolism, growth, and development.

Bodybuilders refer to the thyroid gland as the body’s “furnace” since one of its primary functions is the regulating of metabolism and temperature. The two primary disorders of the thyroid gland are hypothyroidism (low levels of thyroid hormones) and hyperthyroidism (thyroid hormone levels too high). It’s the drugs that are used to treat hypothyroidism that have become popular.

When levels of T3 and/or T4 are insufficient the body’s metabolism slows down and the individual gains weight, usually in the form of fat. Thyroid drugs such as Cytomel are very effective at reversing this condition. These drugs are used to drop bodyfat percentages to the low single digit range. The big disadvantage of thyroid drugs is that they often leave the individual dependent on them. Once you depress the thyroid’s ability to manufacture its own hormones, they may never return to normal levels. Numerous tales are told of male competitors and female fitness contestants ballooning up after coming off their fat loss thyroid medication. In most cases the only treatment is to go back on the drugs and stay on.

10 Ways to Avoid a Heart Attack

A heart attack is known as a myocardial infarction. This occurs when the heart muscle is damaged or does not receive enough oxygen. Many cardiac related problems occur due to blockages in arteries that carry purified blood away from the heart to different parts of the body. Another cause is the formation of blood clots.

Very often, it is quite difficult to differentiate between a heart attack and heartburn. The common signs of a heart attack are a tightness, pain, or discomfort in the chest. Sweating, nausea, and vomiting that are accompanied by intense pressure in the chest. A radiating and intense pain in the chest that extends from the chest to the left arm. A shortness of breath for more than a few minutes. If you have any of the above you must consult the doctor or go to the emergency rooms.

If you even think you are having a heart attack you must call for a cardiac care ambulance, and put under your tongue a sorbitrate or chew an aspirin. If you are allergic to aspirin don’t take one. At the hospital care will include rapid thrombolysis, cardiac catheterization, and angioplasty. They will also administer intravenously clot busting medications.

The risk factors for a heart attack include: smoking, diabetes, high levels of cholesterol, hypertension, family history of heart diseases, atherosclerosis, lack of exercise, obesity, and fast foods.

Reduce the risks of a heart attack by:

1. Quitting smoking.

2. Eating healthy. Avoid fatty foods, excess salt, and red meats.

3. Controlling high blood pressure and diabetes.

4. Ensuring regular exercise at least 30 minutes a day. Walking is most beneficial.

Controlling High Blood Pressure Using Medication

You may have done some research already into Avapro medication, so you'll know that it is a treatment that helps to reduce high blood pressure. It is part of the drug family called angiotensin receptor blockers. It works by applying a direct action on the walls of the blood vessels. This action prevents the narrowing of the arteries that comes from constriction factors in order to help let the blood move more freely through them.

When and how to use Avapro medication

The prescription of Avapro by doctors to treat kidney problems and hypertension is for those who suffer from non-insulin dependent diabetes. However, some conditions such as kidney and liver dysfunctions, high potassium levels in the blood and congestive heart failure do not combine well with the taking of Avapro medication.

The doctor's instructions may vary from the product label, but it is important to follow these instructions of your doctor when administering the treatment as they have been tailored to your particular medical condition. The drug unlike many other treatments can be taken with or without food, but to improve absorption it is best taken with a full glass of water. Don't expect any rapid improvements in how you feel as the Avapro medication needs to be taken for a few weeks to realize the benefits.

A pregnant woman prescribed to Avapro medication should not administer the treatment so it is advised to check whether they are pregnant. Furthermore, birth control methods ought not to be used whilst taking the treatment as Avapro can potentially lead to abnormalities in the unborn child or in the worst case death of the fetus. If you discover you are pregnant, talk to your doctor so they can instruct you with the measures to take.

Possible adverse reactions to Avapro medication

There are a couple of categories of adverse reactions that can possible occur to the Avapro medication, In the first category they can be both intense and sever, requiring immediate medical attention. These include:

- digestive symptoms including a loss of appetite, stomach aches and nausea;

- weight gain;

- rapid swelling and hives, much like an allergic reaction;

- changes of skin and eye color or jaundice;

- urine color changes and even urination is more difficult.

The second category are reactions that are quite normal at the start of administration which do not mean a termination of the treatment, but the patient nevertheless ought to inform their doctor about their experiences of them

- heartburn and upset stomach.

- Dizziness, chills, fever and other flu-like symptoms

- signaled muscular and joint pains.

This second category reactions are not reported to last long and disappear once the body becomes accustomed to the Avapro medication.

From the research you have already done you will probably be aware that Avapro is continuing to be an effective treatment for the high blood pressure condition. Its effective because it prevents the narrowing of blood vessels by regulating Angiotensin II hormone. The narrowing of blood vessels is the cause of the high blood pressure. As you will aware, like with any prescription drugs, care is needed during the course of the treatment but you should see that the Avapro is extremely effective in reducing your high blood pressure.
